At Xishan Primary School, the Programme for Active Learning (PAL) goes beyond providing meaningful and enjoyable learning experiences. It serves as an intentional platform for developing students' Self-Management Skills (SMS), equipping them with the habits and dispositions needed for learning, relationships and everyday life.

Across every PAL domain, teachers explicitly teach and reinforce key Self-Management Skills by embedding them into authentic, hands-on learning experiences. Through purposeful guidance, collaborative activities and reflection, students are given opportunities to practise these skills in meaningful contexts and apply them beyond the classroom.

By intentionally integrating Self-Management Skills into every PAL experience, Xishan empowers students to become self-directed learners who demonstrate responsibility, resilience, respect and care for others. Through these rich learning experiences, we nurture confident, compassionate and future-ready learners who are equipped to learn, contribute and thrive in school and beyond.

Xishan Primary School intentionally teaches and reinforces core self-management skills through the three broad areas of the Programme for Active Learning (PAL), helping students develop confidence, resilience, responsibility, and positive social skills.
Visual Art enhances students’ active listening skills by encouraging them to follow instructions carefully, observe details attentively, and respond thoughtfully during creative activities.

Gratitude Pebble: Students explored the pointillism technique to create a gratitude pebble while practising active listening by following instructions and classroom expectations. Enter content to place beside the image.

Copilot said: Students develop organisational skills by using LEGO bricks to plan, design, and build miniature furniture models.

Baby Bear’s Chair: Students used LEGO® bricks to design and build miniature furniture while developing organizational skills by managing their materials and keeping their workspace organized.

Games and Sports develops students’ communication skills by encouraging them to collaborate with teammates, share ideas clearly, and work together effectively to achieve common goals.

Picnic Time: Students developed collaboration skills by planning and carrying out a class picnic, sharing ideas, making decisions together, and taking responsibility for group tasks.
